CHARITABLE SUPPORT

In the world of food, restaurants and chefs, there is a lot of giving and serving. Accordingly, we are not surprised, and always impressed, by the contributions of time, money and food that we see chefs and restaurants making to charity. As a leading culinary education institution, we try to do our share with fundraising, scholarships and the support of non-profits in a range of spheres related or close to ICE®'s mission.

These spheres include:
  • Ongoing support to education
  • Hunger relief-at home and abroad
  • Helping the New York City Community
  • Disaster Response
  • Support of culinary and foodservice trade groups
Following is a summary of those efforts since 2003. By numbers we site 17 organizations that received scholarships, goods, services and financial support valued at over $325,000

City Harvest
ICE® President Rick Smilow is a board member of City Harvest, New York City's oldest and most well-known food rescue organization.

ICE® assists City Harvest with fundraising by hosting donor development events, donating cooking parties as auction item and co-sponsoring one of the organization's trucks. Over the past several years, this has totaled over $20,000 in financial support.

ICE® also donates food and ingredients to City Harvest on a daily basis and is now the organization's "top school donor."

Action Against Hunger (AAH)
ICE® President Rick Smilow is on the Board of Advisors of this international food relief agency. AAH focuses on hunger relief, clean water and sanitation programs throughout Africa and Asia. Over the past few years, ICE® has in part or whole catered donor development events for AAH, and contributed classes and parties for fundraising auctions. Additionally, ICE® is the Culinary Coordinator for AAH's annual fall gala at Capitale. The value of these goods and services exceeds $20,000.

Asian Tsunami Disaster Relief Fundraisers
In January 2005, ICE® held two culinary fundraisers that raised over $32,000 for Action Against Hunger's Tsunami Relief Fund. One event was an Asian cooking demonstration class, and the other was a dinner with Food Network guest speakers Sara Moulton and David Rosengarten. Dozens of ICE® Chef-Instructors and students volunteered their time to make both events happen.

Helping the NYC Community

New York City Board of Education
Since 2005, ICE® has hosted an annual six to nine day skill development course for 45 New York City school system cooks and managers. NYC's School Food program—the largest school meal program in America—has major improvement initiatives underway, and ICE® management has proactively reached out to the Executive Chef and Director to explore means by which ICE® can help.

Madison Square Boys & Girls Clubs
Every other year, ICE® donates a cooking party to be auctioned at one of this New York City charity's fundraisers.

New York City Fire Department
Periodically, ICE® hosts a hands-on cooking class for disabled and/or retired New York City firemen.

9/11 Windows of Hope Family Relief Fund
Following the 2001 World Trade Center tragedy, ICE® set up a $50,000 scholarship fund for family members of victims to attend ICE®'s career programs. This fund has allowed two women, Yolanda Redroban and Mary Maciejewski, to attend ICE® in 2003 and 2004 and start a new career.

Support of Other Foodservice Trade Groups

Les Dames D'Escoffier
In recent years, ICE® has provided its full facility and extensive logistical support to Les Dames D'Escoffier for its fall fundraiser, Festival of Food.
