It is often helpful to read the local newspapers of each borough since many
owners prefer to list only in these publications. Here are just a few (their
websites are included where available):

REAL ESTATE BROKERS |
|
| |
|
Using
a real estate broker has its obvious advantages and disadvantages.
A broker's fee can range from no money at all to one
month's rent to 15% of a year's rent. You will be required
to sign a contract that holds you responsible for payment
of the broker's fee. This fee should be paid only after
you have signed a lease for an apartment referred to
you by that broker. Some brokers, however, require the
fee, deposit and initial rent upon application. If this
is required, do not relinquish your money if you are
not certain you want that apartment. |

REFERRAL
SERVICES AND
FINDING A ROOMATE |
|
| |
|
Newspapers
often include listings offered through referral services.
These agencies usually charge $75 or more to provide you
with a list of apartments. While some of these agencies
are reputable, many of them are unlicensed, their lists
outdated and/or copied from newspaper classified. If you
decide to use one of these services, choose carefully and
know your rights before signing anything or giving the
agency any money.
